Work Record Seven : Skittles and M and Ms

Work Record Seven : Skittles and M and Ms

Plans for shoot:
For this shoot I will be using peanut M and Ms which are larger than original M and Ms which will allow me to maneuver them more easily than if they were skittles or other types of sweets. I will be using a macro lens with a tripod and remote release. I will be using a mid-ground f-stop as it will provide a large enough depth of field so that all of the individual sweets will remain in focus.

Images that need improvement

DS7_7695.JPG:
Due to the M and Ms being in the flask the outlines of the shapes are obscured, because of this the camera has difficulty picking up on the outlines of the M and Ms. To correct this I changed the area of focus in the camera. Despite my best efforts this happened again in DS7_7706.JPG and I corrected this in the same manner as before.

DS7_7708.JPG:
As  I was shooting during the daytime I unfortunately caught glare again on the glass flask. As this was an issue in the past I chose to change my light source from the lightbulb to natural light. This created more glare which I then combated by using a large board to block the glare and as I was using a remote release I was also able to use a torch in the same hand without jogging the camera.

A03: Record ideas , observations and insights relevant to intentions, reflecting critically on work and progress.

My main ideas for this shoot were to experiment with a solid subject matter that would enable different compositions without the extensive cleanup necessary if I were using colour liquid and tipped it onto the floor. I also enjoy these images as the meaning behind them is left completely to the viewer.

For example the last image shows the M and Ms spilling out of the flask and to some people that is all it will be however, there are connotations of branches in the shot with the way in which they have spread themselves out. I would have like to use different vessels to put the M and Ms in, unfortunately several people in the vicinity have a nut allergy so this wasn't plausible. I didn't sort them into seperate colours as I wanted to use Photoshop techniques to isolate the colours (and I too have a mild nut allergy and didn't want to push my luck).

A02: Explore and select appropriate resources, media, materials, techniques and processes, reviewing and refining ideas as work develops.

For this shoot I used a Nikon D7200 with a 60mm macro lens, tripod and remote release. I wanted to use the flask that I had previously used for coloured water shoots as it is a nice shape and despite the glare that it causes, the funnelling allows for a pleasant display of colour. Some of the shots look warmer than other as these were taken using the light from a light bulb; the cooler images were taken using natural light and a torch. One concern I had with this shoot was that the auto-focus on the camera wouldn't be able to decipher between the flask and the contents. The flask wasn't an issue in the end result as I was using such a shallow F-stop and was blocking the light from outside.

If I were to shoot this again I would like to use a different type of sweet, mainly so that the threat of death is greatly decreased, and the other reason being that the shape of the M and Ms meant they were unstable and rolled away in look at wrong. A substitute for M and Ms could be skittles or smarties as they are also multi coloured and would fit inside the flask. They would also be more cylindrical and less likely to roll away mis-shot.

A01: Develop ideas through sustained and focused investigations informed by contextual and other sources, demonstrating analytical and critical understanding.

This shoot relates to selective colour as there is a wide variety of different coloured chocolates present and I will use editing software to change the colour shots to black and white. I specifically wanted to use a solid for this shoot as using liquids was interesting yet challenging. Some of the acrylics left residues on the inside of the cups I was using making the colours blend instead of being individual thus making it difficult to elicit a colour specific emotion.

To improve my images I used Photoshop. I began by opening the RAW files and used the sliders to adjust the exposure, contrast etc. I then applied a black and white layer. Next, I clicked on SELECT from the top bar. I then clicked on COLOUR RANGE. This allows me to choose a specific colour throughout the whole image rather than slowly removing piece of the black and white layer using an eraser tool.

This meant that I can select one colour from the whole flask. I used this method on the other images in this shoot.

Final Images:

A04: Present a personal and meaningful response that realises intentions and, where appropriate, makes connections between visual and other elements.

I believe that this shoot is an appropriate response to the theme of selected colour as I have isolated the individual colours, thus allowing the viewer to experience different emotions depending on which aspect of the same image is in colour.

To improve upon this shoot I would like to return to coloured liquids again and experiment with mixing them together to investigate the different patterns that occur during the mixing process, but also the resulting colour after the mixing has taken place.
