Work Record Six: Tea Party

Work Record Six: Tea Party

Plans for Shoot:
My plan for this shoot are to use different colour liquids paired with black and white techniques during the editing process to create a single coloured item within an image. I will be shooting this in the studio and so will be using a Macro lens, tripod and remote release.

Research Influence:
The person I have chosen to research for this shoot is a French documentary photographer named Sophie Calle. Specifically I am interested in her Hotel Shoot as I am fond of the compositions and the layouts of the several images together. I am hoping to adopt her documentary style and black and white images.

Images that need improvement:

DS7_7618.JPG:
As I was using a macro lens for this shoot I was unable to change the focal length to enlarge the shot meaning I wasn't able to capture the whole of the tea cups. I will not need to re-shoot as I have a large number of appropriately framed images that I will continue with.

DS7_7635.JPG:
There is a shadow in the top left corner of this image as there was an object in front of the light source. I saw this as I was reviewing the images before changing the composition. I then went back and re-shot at the time so that there was no shadow in my images.

Best Images:
I will be separating my best images into three sets as I believe this makes the compositions more accessible to the viewer as they will have similar compositions.

Set Two:

Set Three:

A03:Record ideas, observations and insights relevant to intentions, reflecting critically on work and progress.

My main idea for this shoot was to follow along the lines of my previous shoots and use the same compositions with different colours in each variation. This approach is represented in the first two sets of images. For the last set of images I was inspired by Sophie Calle and so wanted to have a more candid style in the last image set.

This shoot didn't go according to plan as there was a shadow in some of my images which meant I had to reshoot however, I hadn't yet moved the composition and so was a relatively easy issue to fix. I used a low F-stop in this shoot, particularly in the last set of images so that the viewer was ingrained into the image and not overwhelmed with the busy composition. I also shot relatively close to the props as does Calle in her images.

A02: Explore and select appropriate resources, media, materials, techniques and processes, reviewing and refining ideas as work develops.

To prepare for this shoot I attempted to complete it on a table top but couldn't move far enough away to use a Macro lens and my 18-200mm zoom lens caused too much lens creep to be practical. My solution to this was to shoot on the floor and extend the tripod as far as it would go. This made the tripod rickety and so a remote release was necessary; I also had difficulty looking through the eyepiece  as I was too short. To fix this I stood on a chair and used liveview so as not to move the camera while taking a shot.

As stated before I used an average F-stop of 8-16 in the first two image sets to ensure that the whole image was in focus. For the third image set I dropped the F-stop to F/5 to create a shallower depth of field and direct the viewers attention onto the coloured liquid rather than the other scattered objects.

If I was to shoot this again I would perhaps change the colour of the liquid in the candid shots, despite this I am pleased with this shoot and will not be attempting it again.

A01: Develop ideas through sustained and focused investigations informed by contextual and other sources, demonstrating analytical and critical understanding.

To improve my images I will be using Photoshop.

Beginning I open all of my best images RAW files and use the sliders to adjust them. The lighting I was using in this shoot was warm and so to counterbalance this I moved the blue/ yellow slider close to the blue to remove the unwanted warm tones in the shots.

After all the images were open I applied a black and white layer.

I then used the quick selection tool to select one cup at a time. Once selected I used DELETE to remove the black and white layer over the selected area.

I repeated this process for each cup until I had a full colour, black and white set and one of each cup saved as a JPG file.

I then opened all of these JPGs and copied and pasted them into the first JPG as layers.

I then click on WINDOW then TIMELINE to bring up the small bar at the bottom of the screen. I then clicked on MAKE FRAME ANIMATION, thus bringing the bar up at the bottom and moving the first layer in as a frame.

I then held down CTRL and selected all of the layer. I then clicked on the small drop down menu on the bar at the bottom, then MAKE FRAMES FROM LAYER.

This moves all of the layers into the bottom bar as frames which I then set to 0.5 of a second.

Once completed I then clicked FILE, then EXPORT. I then clicked on SAVE FOR WEB which brought up the next window.

I then saved the image and here is the final results:

I used this same technique to edit the other two image sets also.

Final Images:

A04: Present a personal and meaningful response that realises intentions and ,where appropriate, makes connections between visual and other elements.

I feel that this shoot is one of the most successful ones I have completed due to the isolating effect of the singular coloured item and how it creates an effect similar to tunnel vision. My research into Sophie Calle was useful as it provided me with a different approach to macro photography which I feel engages the viewer more than some of the other shoots I have completed previously. I believe that this shoot has furthered my research into selected colour as it emphasised the effect that singulating one colour can create in a photograph.

Progression:

For my next shoot I would like to continue my investigation into isolating different colours individually with something solid so that I have greater control over the composition of the image. To improve this shoot I will use either skittles or M&Ms as they are brightly coloured which will create vivid singular colours and are relatively uniform in shape.
